Morning,

I'm after any recommendations where to buy a decent Driving Iron.

I'm not a great golfer, so as yet I've not took the plunge and brought myself a driver - but I'm looking to buy a driving iron as the next step!

Do any of you know of a any sales or fairly priced shops to get one?

I'm not after anything too expensive, but at the same time I'm not after a £7.99 one from sportssoccer! Unless some tells me the £7.99 one's in sportssoccer are Ok and worth a try.

Cheers Guys and Gals.

directgolf.co.uk are good prices for quality stuff. try ebay, but only respected sellers. you say you're not a great golfer but i would say buy the best you can reasonably afford, as it gets more expensive to replace as/when the bug bites and you want better gear. it is one sport where the equipment really makes a big difference when you reach a certain level... good luck, when you improve we can start a forum challenge!!!! **thumbup

I'd say it depends what you're level you're at and how seriously you want to take the game. I'm a 22 (hacker) handicapper. I had a membership for 3 years but now I just play when the mood takes me. I spent what I consider to be a decent amount on my irons but as for drivers, wedges etc, there doesn't seem any point. I've got mates with similar handicaps who regularly spend £xxxs on drivers whereas I spent £10 on on my Donnay from Sports Soccer and are they driving any better than me?? Naah.

If you're going to take golf seriously and looking at spending some money on it then I'd suggest investing in some lessons, save the spending on the bigger, better, longer and more accurate club for when you can play a bit, unless you can already.

If you are going to invest some decent money then try before you buy. As Proccy said Direct Golf are pretty good, they have an outlet at Beckets Farm.

As for driving irons, I've never tried one, but if they're as successful as my other long irons then I don't think I'll bother.

I'm taking my clubs to Tenerife...anybody played there?

I rarely use my driving iron, but cost me peanuts (less than a tenner) and does the job. TBH, the way I play is rarely hit anything longer than a 5 iron even on the par 5s!

I'll explain my 'Level'.

For a long time I've been a 120/130 hacker and would only play a couple of times a year. But, I've joined a society this year, so I'm playing a little more. I hit a very pleasing 107 on Saturday (including 3 off the tee twice, so really I should of hit 103) so I'm confident I'll crack 100 before the bad weather starts.

The 'biggest' club I have is my 3 Iron! and this us undoubtably holding me back slighty. I'm not confident enough to have a go with a driver, as I've heard some people say it ruins your game if you concentrate on distance (I was going to say lengh then, but I didn't want to give the doc, Proccy and co an excuse to drag this thread in the squaller) too much.

I've been brought some lessons for my contribution as Best Man at my Cousins Wedding, so I don't want to turn up for those with my biggest club 'my 3 Iron!!'

Maybe I will try the sportssoccer £10 club - as a starter, can't do any harm can it?

Cheers.

in reality all you need for your lessons is any club, the pro will concentrate on giving you technique - you will then have to practice hard to translate that technique into scores on the course. on the other hand, i play off 7 and have never had a lesson, but instead learned from watching the best pro's and from golf books.
£10 on a club wont be wasted, but if you take it up seriously you will be chucking it away - as in any aspect of life, you get what you pay for and its your attitude to that i suppose........
length (at the risk of being labelled asleaze bucket) is useful but not the main thing you need... **thumbup

I wouldnt bother getting one to be honest they re the hardest clubs to hit.

Get a decent 3 wood, i picked ap a TaylorMade V Steel for 70 quid last year and its a good banker if your having a poor round, TM have have brought out the new Vsteel so the old ones should be a bargain its great of the tee and the fairway,
Another good alternative is a decent resue club. Howson do the GBH Assasin
which is decent for the money. get a 22 degree it really helps if your topped it 20 yards and want to hit a long 2nd, theyre also good out of semi rough too.

They best advice to give is if your getting a new bat got to somewhere like
Becketts Farm or the American Discount at Quisletts park in kingstanding, where they have a range so you can knock 40 balls and see how you like it.

I went to becketts with the intention of getting a TM 520 tried it and i might as well have been hitting it with the brolley

Im not into buy endless gadgets but i would recommend the grip fix, its a ergonimic grip that fits over you existing grip and forces you to hold correctly
Strong or weak grips are the worst if you cuffing it in to the clubhouse breakfast bar.

Like others have said lessons are the key get a good 3//4 swing goin and practise it as often as you can.

Also get todays golfer they have got good reviews and every month they give you the best clubs for your money, also they have decent freebies one month i got a chipping mat which told you how to position your feet who to distribut your weight and how far the shaft should be infornt of the ball. really helps.

A mate also reccomended those airflow balls so you can get in the garden when you cant be arsed to goto the range

Hope this helps it pretty much the advice i got when i started

very funny!

I prefer a 160-200 yard iron straight down the fairway than a 300 yard straight into the car park/trees/lake/gardens!

I will use my driver on the wide fairways on the Costa del Sol, but the courses over here are a little tighter and I'm just not accurate enough with the the driver and 3W yet.

crazy golf gets a bad press, imo... just needs some sponsorship and better marketing.... got to be more interesting than the "non-crazy" (ain't that an understatement, by the way) version anyway...

Compared with the other 'sports' I do (except cricket) it can be a little frustrating and slow, but still a great game to play with a few mates on a Sunday if nothing else is going on.

I havent played for a while due to my temprement but at some point in the next few years i`ll take it ack up again (beware Simo if your reading this!!!)

When i was playing i had the temptation to try and smash my way out of trouble,a good pal of mine came out with me once and refused to let me take anything longer than a 5 iron in my bag,result-my best ever round by some 10+ shots :o

We played the Bendinat in Majorca a couple of years ago. Some clever person decided to build a hotel right on a dog leg on one of the holes, not allowing for my mate's notorious slice. Ive never seen a swimming pool clear so quickly since the doody scene in Caddyshack.

I played in Majorca to at Paula Golf near cala major, was a lovley place mountains on one side sea on the other, flet like a Costa Del Criminal, only problems it was full of germans. we had this couple behind constantly telling us to play quick, thought i was in the Great Escape, and the 19th hole was like the Nuremburg Rally

best course i played was torrevieja in spain, near alicante - beautiful and challenging so that even if you played crap (i did) the walk was nice...
the worst course in some respects is the brabazon at the belfy UNLESS you are 100% blob on your game. it'll take your average handicapper 100 or more, and cost about 8 balls - not to mention the extortionate green fees to play it. but for the 10th hole alone, if you can go, do it... **thumbup

i've come to a decision about my golf game. In my bag i'm keeping my driving iron, 8 iron, Sand wedge, pitching wedge and a putter

The rest of the clubs can throw themselves of a big cliff it they continue to play as badly as they are at the moment!
